What Do You Need to Build a Pond?

Creating a beautiful and easy to maintain pond requires several components, including pond liners, pumps, filtration systems, and more. Choosing the right product can make your pond last longer and reduce maintenance costs. Let us help you find the best choice!

Step 1: Pond Liner

Select The Right Liner Type for Your Project

1-Step_1-_Pond_Liner

Pond Liner Types

Preformed Rigid Liners

  • Scope of application: Small pond, suitable for first-time pond users.
  • Features: Made of plastic or resin, the shape is fixed, easy to install, and requires no additional trimming or adjustment.

Flexible Pond Liners

  • Scope of application: Suitable for large ponds, especially those requiring free design shapes.
  • Features: Using PVC or EPDM rubber material, can be freely cut to adapt to different terrain needs.
  • PVC pond liner: Lightweight, durable, suitable for common yard ponds.
  • EPDM Pond liner: Thicker, more weather-resistant, suitable for rocky or difficult terrain.

How to Choose the Right Size

The pond liner must be larger in size than the excavated pond to ensure complete coverage of the bottom and side walls of the pond and leave enough margin for fixing.

  • Liner Length = Pond Length + (Pond Depth × 2) + 2 ft overlap
  • Liner Width = Pond Width + (Pond Depth × 2) + 2 ft overlap
  • 7 ft x 10 ft: Suitable for ponds up to 250 gallons
  • 10 ft x 13 ft: Suitable for ponds up to 500 gallons
  • 13 ft x 20 ft: Suitable for ponds up to 1,100 gallons

Installation Tips

  • The pond liner should have at least 10 inches of extra edge, with 12-18 inches being ideal for better stability.
  • The pond should have a minimum depth of 1.5 feet, with koi ponds requiring at least 3 feet of depth for a healthier environment.
  • Before laying the liner, remove any sharp objects, rocks, or debris from the pond bottom to prevent puncturing. It is recommended to use an underlayment such as sand or old blankets for added protection.
  • Ensure the liner is pressed into all gaps and has at least 1 foot of overlap on each side of the pond. Secure it using decorative rocks or landscaping material to prevent shifting.

Step 2: Pond Pump

Keep Your Pond Water Moving

Maintaining a healthy and beautiful pond requires proper water circulation. A pond pump helps to keep the water fresh, prevents stagnant water that can lead to unpleasant odors and mosquito breeding, and allows you to create stunning water features like fountains, waterfalls, and spitters.

5-How_to_Choose_the_Right_Pump

How to Choose the Right Pump?

A general rule of thumb is to choose a pump that can circulate the total pond volume at least once per hour.

Example:

✅ If your pond holds 200 gallons, select a pump with at least 200 GPH.
✅ If your pond holds 800 gallons, select a pump with at least 800 GPH.
It’s always better to choose a slightly larger pump to ensure efficient water flow and adjust the output using a flow controller if necessary.

Step 3: Filtration

7-Step_3-Filtration

Keep Your Pond Water Clean & Healthy

A proper filtration system is essential for keeping your pond water clean, clear, and healthy. It removes debris, balances nutrients, and prevents harmful algae growth. Choosing the right filtration system depends on your pond size, water quality, and whether you have fish.

8-Types_of_Filtration_Systems

Types of Filtration Systems

Pre-Filters: Collects large debris before it enters the pump, protecting the pump and extending its lifespan.

Mechanical Filtration: Works with a pump to trap dirt, leaves, and other debris, keeping the water clean. Our Poposoap filter boxes include high-quality filter pads that efficiently capture particles.

Biological Filtration: Uses beneficial bacteria to break down organic waste and maintain a healthy nitrogen cycle. Our filters include Bio-Balls, which promote bacterial growth for natural water purification.

Pressurized Filtration: Combines mechanical and biological filtration while using pressure from the pump to force water through the filter, preventing debris from settling.

Ultraviolet (UV) Filtration: Uses UV light to kill algae and harmful microorganisms, keeping the water crystal clear.
