Site Selection & Design Planning
Determine the location, size, shape and layout of the pond and waterfall.
- Choose an area with plenty of sunlight and a little shade, avoiding full sun exposure or excessive fallen leaves.
- Recommended size: 3 to 6 square meters, medium depth 60cm (suitable for raising koi).
- Determine the water flow path (where the waterfall starts and flows to the bottom of the pool).
- Sketch: Preset the structures such as the water pump, filter, waterfall bucket, and large stone stacking area.
Excavation & Bottom Arrangement of the Pond
Two layers of structures were excavated: the outer gentle slope area (30cm deep) + the central deep water area (60cm deep).
Lay the anti-seepage fabric (such as PVC/ rubber film), and then lay the sand layer or pebbles.
Reserve the positions for the filter box and the water pump.
Put it into the water outlet pipe of the waterfall and extend from the bottom of the pool to the top of the waterfall.
Installation of the Filtration System
Realize water circulation: The pump sucks the bottom water → the filter box purifies → the outlet pipe leads to the waterfall → the return flow.
Place the water pump in the deep area at the bottom of the pool and connect the filter box.
The outlet pipe of the filter box is connected to an extension hose leading to the top of the waterfall.
Try to hide the pipelines (passing through pipes or buckets from the pool edge).
Connect to a solar power panel or an outdoor socket.

Use natural materials such as artificial rockery stones and bluestone slabs to build 2 to 3 layers of height difference.
Adjust the water pressure and test the water output effect.

Add clear water, let it stand for 24 hours, and then start the pump to test the circulation.
Light-blocking aquatic plants such as water plants, duckweed and water lilies can be added.
When releasing koi: Place a warm water adaptation bag in advance and release it slowly.
Regularly check whether the filter box and the water outlet are clogged.
