Create a Wildlife Pond with Poposoap

Site Selection & Design Planning

Provide a safe and sustainable habitat for wild animals and plants.

  • Choose a garden corner where sunlight and shadow combine (about 4 to 6 hours of sunlight per day).
  • Avoid being close to the main sidewalk to reduce distractions.
  • Design a gentle slope structure to facilitate the ascent and descent of frogs and birds.
  • Irregular shapes can be adopted to simulate natural ponds.

Tips:

  • Set aside space to grow local plants or set up a "nature observation corner".
  • Stay away from shrubs or fruit trees appropriately to prevent fallen leaves from polluting the water body.

Excavation & Structural Construction

Form a structure with deep and shallow layers that is conducive to animal activities.

The shallow water area (15 to 30cm) is used for water plants and birds to wade through.

The deep water area (40 to 60cm) is conducive to overwintering or habitation.

The base is laid with anti-seepage membrane (PVC/ rubber) and the edge is pressed with pebbles to prevent slipping.

Build a small sloping area for hedgehogs and frogs to enter and exit.

Installation Pump & Filtration System

Maintaining clear water bodies with high oxygen content is conducive to ecological stability.

Install low-noise water pumps (Poposoap solar water pumps are recommended)

The water pump sucks water to the filter box (filter leaves, algae).

The filtered clear water is returned to the pool through nozzles/small waterfalls.

Ecological Arrangement & Plant Cultivation

Build a rich and diverse bio-friendly aquatic ecosystem.

Suggestions for Aquatic Plants

Duckweed, Elodea (oxygen supply)

Water lily (for shading)

Water onion/Iris (Buffer zone along the shore)

Suggestions for Plants Along the Shore

Local plants, wildflowers and reeds are grown

It is recommended to plant butterfly-attracting plants (such as sage and verbena).

Attract Wild Animals

Attract and protect natural visitors such as birds, frogs and insects.

Set up small bird baths and driftwood for birds to rest on.

Tree stumps and stones are set up along the pool to form micro-habitats.

Pair it with shallow water beaches to attract butterflies and bees to drink water.

Reserve undisturbed corners for animals to inhabit.

Maintenance & Seasonal Adjustment

Maintain a good ecological cycle and it is suitable for all seasons.

Check whether the water pump and filter are clogged every month.

In autumn, fallen leaves should be regularly removed to prevent eutrophication of water bodies.

There is no need to completely change the water in winter. Just keep the deep water area from freezing.

Reserve undisturbed corners for animals to inhabit. In summer, water levels evaporate quickly. Regularly replenish water to prevent fish from lacking oxygen.

Ecological Trivia & FAQ

Does Wildlife Pond need to keep fish?

It's not necessary, but you can keep a few goldfish or koi. Pay attention to water quality control.

Will mosquitoes breed?

When there is a circulating water flow and filtration system, mosquitoes are difficult to breed.

Is it safe for children to approach?

It is recommended to install a fence or the water depth should be less than 40cm. It can also be paired with a parent-child observation area.
